Health insurance basics

Zip Code:

The kind of insurance in which one can get ones medical costs paid for by the insurer under circumstances which are covered by the insurance, like accidents, is known as health insurance. The health insurance provider may be a non profit organization or a private company, although in systems which are market based, private companies are relied on more than non profit ones.

To this end, someone who wants to be insured will have to pay a premium so that if the time comes, health insurance can cover medical costs incurred, if they are due to covered causes. However, there are some health conditions which require medical attention but are not covered by health insurance. These should be clearly stated to the insured in writing before the insured startes paying the premium. For example, most times health insurance will not cover the costs of a breast augmentation surgery, but will do so if the implants have been necessitated due to a masectomy in a breast cancer patient, or if a woman has suffered an allergic reaction to her implants and now requires medical attention.

Before choosing a health insurance policy, make sure you know what it offers, and what it will not. Thus, if you’re going in for a certain surgery which is not covered by the insurance you will save yourself from a nasty shock when you find out post surgery that you are expected to pay for it yourself and not rely on your health insurance policy to do so for you. Once you’ve selected a health insurance policy you are comfortable with, see if you can afford the monthly premium, and if it is less on taking a family insurance rather than an individual one.

Make sure you are also aware of whether your chosen health insurance policy covers home care costs, or out of hospital charges. Also see if you have any diseases at the moment which are not covered by the health insurance scheme. It will also do you good to find out if you are at liberty to choose your own doctor or medical institution under this health insurance policy or not. Asking all these basic questions beforehand will ensure that you know what you will be getting or not getting with your chosen health insurance policy, and will also prepare you for cases in which your health insurance will not help you cover the medical expenses incurred.
